About the Atholl Highlanders Tune: While there’s some debate about exactly who wrote The Atholl Highlanders tune, most people believe it was originally written by William Ross (1823-1891) as a two-part march. However, since that time a lot of different march and jig variations have been created. Our version is a 3-part tune.

The History of the Atholl Highlanders: Originally the Atholl Highlanders were organized in December 1777 by John Murray (the 4th Duke of Atholl) as the “77th Regiment of Foot." This regiment acted as a relief for other regiments serving in North America, but the group ended up serving most of its time in Ireland. After 5 years of service, the regiment was disbanded in 1783.

About the Highland Fling: This dance is passed down through of generations of lovely dancers. The Highland Fling is performed at festivals, competitions, Highland games and just for fun all around the world. The dance was developed in the Scottish Highlands in the 19th and 20th centuries. It's a familiar series of steps featuring twirls, hops and raised arms that are a well known signature of Highland Dance and Scottish culture. Did you know there is a Scottish Official Board of Highland Dancing, establishing rules for competitions and attire, and certifying competitions and instructors. Our Highland Dancers are lead by Deborah Choszczyk.
