Frédérick Casadesus: Where do the thoughts go of someone who, at the autumn of his life, chooses to play the Lyric Pieces? Aldo Ciccolini once followed in Grieg’s footsteps — The Ballade in G Minor and, already, a few pages from the Lyric Pieces. His companions were Schubert and Chabrier; he brought a new youth to Satie, frequented Rossini as much as Chopin. Does he recall the exceptional performance he gave of Liszt’s Years of Pilgrimage? One cannot rule it out, for Liszt’s masterpiece opens so many windows onto the adventure of our Norwegian.

At times restrained, at times fiery, Ciccolini seems driven by a constant passion. This inner force enables him to approach short pieces without fear of losing his way. The constraints imposed by the work vanish, carried away by the enchantment of the notes and the coherence of the discourse. Aldo Ciccolini knows how to balance intelligence and sensitivity, to respect the meaning of a musical text without lapsing into pathos.

He loves to dwell in the company of those composers — of whom Chopin seems to him the master — who keep equal distance between the heart’s impulses and the mind’s arithmetic. He turns the pages of Grieg as the days pass — bathed in a tender light. A touch of fantasy nestles within the quietness. One might well think that, in these notes, the pianist is confiding much of himself.
